Most people would agree – life can be difficult. Even during the best moments of life, it’s not uncommon for people to work to make it that way. For example, if you’re surrounded by a loving family, that often means you’ve been through pregnancy, or have shown warm character, or have looked after people, or simply had the good look to connect with vibrant and warm people. It isn’t something that just materializes out of the ether.

Is this supposed to demotivate you? Quite the contrary! By accepting how tough life can be, we can be better to one another, more focused, more interested, more empathetic, and more open. We can realize that no person is an island and ask for help when we need it, realizing that no man or woman is an island and that we all need one another to benefit.

Using life difficulties as an opportunity for growth can also be a wonderful outcome, helping to recontextualize our past and renew it for the future. It’s not uncommon to hear “yes, I’ve been through some tough times, but I wouldn’t change a thing because it made me who I am today.”

So – how can you springboard from life difficulties into a better tomorrow? Let’s consider that, below:

Finding Lessons In Adversity

It’s easy to think that every difficulty must be a test or have some kind of life lesson in it for you, but unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Sometimes bad circumstances can just be bad luck. It’s as simple as that.

But does this mean you can’t learn lessons from it, on your terms? Of course not. For example, if you’ve been through a medical scare, it can help soften you and become more empathetic to people, knowing what it’s like to be vulnerable and care about others. 

This is just one example. It might be that you try to make the most of your days, or exercise a little more financial discipline, or realize that despite feeling a little trapped in your routine, you have a loving family and home around you and that’s all you need. Sometimes, the lesson is what counts most – and you get to decide what it is.

Sharing Your Experience

If you’d rather not share your experience, you are under no obligation to. This is entirely your choice. That being said, connecting with people about that experience can be a wonderful method of rejuvenating your perspective, and bringing some value into the world because of it.

For example, perhaps you could run a blog about the illness you’ve been facing, or the difficulties you’ve had with divorce, or even share advice for people who might be dealing with misfortunate as you once did. You may be surprised just how helpful the perspective of someone who truly understands can be to someone going through hardship. You can even help monetize your blog through methods that don’t exploit your readers, allowing you to keep this hobby functional over time.

Identifying Personal Strengths

They say what doesn’t finish us makes us stronger. Is that true? Well, in some cases yes, and in some cases no. But the real virtue is that if you have been through hard times, there’s a sense of pride that comes from that.

It can also make you a little more sure of yourself if you accept the credit you’re due. This might mean realizing that despite your urge, you’ve lasted this long without your addiction, and you’re the kind of person who no longer partakes in a drink or whatever else the problem was. Understanding these virtues can help you keep up with your good habits, and move into the future just a little more focused and optimistic than you were otherwise. Put simply – give yourself the credit you’re due. You do deserve that.

Developing Coping Strategies

Not all difficult experiences are simply finished in our lives when they end. Put more simply – the effects of a difficult time can linger in our minds and perhaps even in our souls. That’s why it can be helpful to develop coping strategies to help deal with that.

Speaking to a counsellor, attending group meetings, relying on friends and family, going for walks, meditating, and focusing on your wellbeing can be helpful tools to feel stronger, and to let the tug of the past remain in the past. Over time, this can help you feel more attentive, interested and focused, and help you feel stronger than anything else you’ve overcome.

With this advice, you’re certain to use those life difficulties to raise you up, instead of bring you down. You may be surprised at your own strength, and it’s important to give yourself the credit for it.
