I’ve had a decent amount of breakups in the past. The hurt was real for everyone, but eventually I go over the pain. Today I figured I would share with you guys a few of my favorite breakup songs that I played over and over again when I was experiencing heartbreak. If you’re going through a breakup, I know it’s hard right now and it may feel like the feeling will last forever… but trust me, you’ll get through it.
12 Breakup Songs that I played through my heartbreak – Dating
Brokenhearted – Brandy ft. Wanya Morris
“I’m lonely, brokenhearted. Life’s not over. I can start again while I’m lonely brokenhearted. It’s a hurting thing to get over…”
When I tell you guys, this is one of the most relatable breakup songs to listen to. You realize the overwhelming feeling of being alone and losing the one you cared for, but also realizing that your life isn’t over. There’s more for you out there in the world even after this breakup.
I will always love this cover of Brokenhearted by Tori Kelly (one of my fav. singers) & Jeremy Passion.
Foolish – Ashanti
This is one of the most well-known breakup songs from my friends. Ashanti expresses how the one she loves keeps treating her wrong yet she keeps wanting to return back to him. This is why the song is called Foolish because she knows she deserves better.
Say Something – A Great Big World, Christina Aguilera
“Say something I’m giving up on you…”
When you have to realize that something is over and you want the person to say something, but you have to let go. This song always brings tears to my eyes because you can feel the sadness within it.
I Wish I Wasn’t – Heather Headley
“I wish I wasn’t in love with you so you couldn’t hurt me..”
When you love someone and they continue to hurt you. All you feel is your heart aching as you try to still stick with them.
Possibility – Lykke Li
“So tell me when you hear my heart stop. You’re the only one who knows..”
I found this song when watching Twilight: New Moon. The Twilight soundtracks were everything!
Within this song you feel like the heart beats for the person you love and you hope they can hear it and understand how much you care.

Emotional Rollercoaster – Vivian Green
When the person you’re with constantly shows that they don’t truly care about your feelings. Your emotions are all over the place and you realize the situation you’re in isn’t healthy at all.
Ex-Factor – Lauryn Hill
“Is this just a silly game that forces you to act this way? Forces you to scream my name then pretend that you can’t stay..”
To me, Ex-Factor is all about a narcissistic person that does whatever they want without thinking about the person they are with. Then when the person tries to leave them because they’re treating them wrong, they don’t want them to go. It’s almost like they like being in control of you and they manipulate you.
Someone Like You – Adele
“Never mind I’ll find someone like you. I wish nothing but the best for you…”
When you accept that things are over and you want your ex to be happy even if they aren’t with you, but you hope they remember you and your time together.

Gone – N’Sync
“Was it something I said to make you turn away? To make you walk out and leave me cold…”
I’m not going to lie to you guys… I used to play this song and look out the window all dramatically like in those music videos. It was hilarious, but sad because I was in my feelings.
I Remember – Keyshia Cole
“I remember when my heart broke. I remember when I gave up lovin’ you. My heart couldn’t take no more of you. I was sad and lonely..”
When someone hurts you to the point where you can’t do it anymore. You just feel hurt and alone.
Take a Bow – Rihanna
“Don’t tell me you’re sorry cuz you’re not. I know you’re only sorry you got caught…”
When someone has been acting like they’ve been faithful and you find out they’ve been lying as well as cheating on you.
What You Do – Chrisette Michele
“No more I’m sorry. I love you. I need proof. Baby boy it’s all in what you do…”
This song is all about showing how you feel about someone with your actions and if they don’t… it’s only words. It doesn’t matter. You want more.
So those were my top 12 Breakup songs that I played through my heartbreaks.
My personal breakup Advice
Remember that this heartbreak won’t last forever. It’s just apart of the process.
Experience the hurt. Reflect on what happened, both the good and the bad. Start taking steps to move forward and remember to always think about your mental health as well as what’s best for you in the long run.
You’ll be okay. I know it!
