Children of the Whales was anime they I consistently avoided watching for about 2 years as it continued to be recommended to me on Netflix. I mainly avoided it because at first glance, it didn’t look like a show that I would actually be interested in watching. I thought it was going to be one of those happy go-lucky anime that didn’t really give me the action that I was yearning for… but I was surprisingly mistaken.
Today I figured I would share with you guys 4 reasons why you should watch Children of the Whales as well as why it is a Netflix anime recommendation.
4 Reasons to watch Children of the Whales | Review – Netflix Anime Recommendation
DISCLAIMER: This anime is not for children! I repeat, this anime is not for children.
Firstly, I just want to say that this is a short anime.. currently. It only has 1 season and 12 episodes within it. So if you’re looking for something short that isn’t 50+ episodes long, this is for you.
It’s not what you expect..
If you’re looking for an anime that seems like it’ll be all bliss.. this isn’t the anime for you. I mean the first episode does start off with a funeral… So this is the only spoiler I am going to give you guys about this show. As Keroberos from Cardcaptor Sakura says, “Expect the unexpected.”
If you like Fantasy & Science-Fiction anime with a dash of action..
This is the anime for you. There is something like magic within this series and you can evaluate as the show goes on that there is a balance in the use of magic within this anime to an extent. There is also some cool fighting scenes within this anime as well.
The storyline…
The plot is pretty well written even though it was upsetting as the show went on. I am not going to lie to you guys.. I was left upset a lot of these episodes, but I kept pushing forward because I had to know what was going to happen next. The show revolved around children on this island. Most people do not reach adulthood or live past their 20’s, but many of them do have particular powers that they can use. The people who do live past a certain age do not have powers and they tend to have different positions like doing labor children can’t do, becoming teachers, or even becoming Elders.
The story line greatly expands on why most of the people of island don’t age up into adulthood too often.

The characters
You will end up loving a decent amount of the characters while also despising quite a few of the characters as well. For the first time in my life… I actually found a character in an anime that I hated soooo much within this series. When you guys watch it, you can guess what character it was that I absolutely despised because I’m sure you won’t like them either.
My favorite characters from Children of the Whales would be: Ouni, Ginshu, & Sami
[I plan on cosplaying them in the near future too.]

A heads up..
When I first watched this show, I expected it to be a 1 season show where everything was resolved in one season. This is in fact a lie and I figured I would let you guys know so you wouldn’t be as disappointed as I was when I realized a season 2 wasn’t made yet. There are talks about a season 2 being in the works, but only time will tell considering this Netflix anime was released in 2017.
Overall, Children of the Whales is a captivating anime to watch. It will intrigue you and potentially upset you. Experience the world of the Children of the Whales. Learn some of the history and the knowledge of their power. You won’t be disappointed.
